Unfortunately, this is nothing new. According to government data, in the last 64 years, 107,487 people died due to heavy rains and floods across India. This accounts for one-fifth of the total global deaths due to floods. The damage it caused collectively amounts to Rs 365,860 crore.
Till August 11, 2018, a collection of news reports on Floodlist.com points to 566 lives lost due to floods in India since the beginning of the year.
Can it get worse? As India’s climate warms, extreme weather conditions are expected to rise, which will mean more intense rain and floods, leaving a high percentage of the population more vulnerable.
