Activist and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan tweeted a news article yesterday about members of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) attacking a professor in Gujarat‘s Kutch University.
In the tweet, Bhushan said, “ABVP goons blacken the face of a professor in Gujarat and parade him! This is their way of celebrating teachers day!” Today is September 5, celebrated as Teachers’ Day, and such a tweet will mislead people into believing that the incident happened a day before Teachers’ Day is celebrated.
#ABVPgoons hashtag is being used by many social media users to highlight the instances when members of ABVP, the student-wing affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), have been violent and disruptive and have been sharing news articles, but without suggesting that the incident happened a day before Teachers’ Day. For instance –
Twitter user @batriankur, who is the State Social Media Coordinator for NSUI as per his bio, has been sharing other instances when ABVP members have attacked teachers, but again without any mention of when the incident happened. For instance, the incident about which the below user has tweeted is from July 19.

Here’s another tweet from him about ABVP members attacking a Delhi University professor. This incident is when professor Prasanta Chakravary was assaulted by the members of ABVP in 2017.
Such tweets are also misleading.
Bhushan’s tweet has been, by now, retweeted nearly 1,500 times and liked by over 2,400 users.
The news article shared by Prashant Bhushan was last updated on June 27 and is about an incident that happened in Kutch University on June 26. Here is a tweet about the said news by news agency ANI –

The members of the ABVP attacked the head of the Department of Science, who was also the head of an election committee of the Kutch University, on June 26. An FIR was also registered against those who attacked the professor.
The incident Prashant Bhushan tweeted about is true but his comment on the issue has the potential to mislead people into believing that the incident happened a day before Teachers’ Day.
